they are different and they both covered areas the other didn't. that's why we love to listen to both of them.
when basie was asked about the diference between him and duke, he answered in the most humble way: class

And don't get me wrong either, but Basie also covered some of the area's that Duke didn't. Remember that Duke was a mostly crossover and commercial band in the earlier years, and even still, the Basie band had those down home musicians who had TOO MUCH soul, man lol. It's not even funny. But these two musicians and bands... consider them to have some of the BEST bands in ANY MUSICAL GENRE in history.

Man i love Basie, don't get me wrong, but Duke covers what basie didn't, thoughts and emotions, which is why i think mingus dug him so much. Gimme some Basie and some Duke and i'll be good, that's all you really need.
