Reagan was one of the best

You're absolutely right about '76. There is no doubt that the watergate debacle by the Nixon administration was a big reason why the Republicans didn't win in '76. Nixon actually may have went down a good President had it not been for Watergate. He helped our relationship with China immensely, and he had basically ended the war in Vietnam before he resigned. But he was too insecure and thought he had to cheat to win re-election. Turns out he wouldn't have had to. He destroyed McGovern in '72.

I'm just giving you a little shit. I'm sure that cable tv gave them access to information and more knowledge of our western culture which I'm sure was appealing to them. But the main reason that many in Eastern Europe became free and the Berlin Wall fell was solidarity(achieved with help of both the Pope and Reagan) and the fall of the Soviet Union, which Reagan had a big part of in many ways. The left knows it. They just can't get themselves to admit it.

Hey, we live in a country that elected Nixon (twice) and Bush (twice). So what? I voted for the Gipper in 1980 too!The 76 general was in large part a reaction against Watergate and the pardon) so it was probably good (for Reagan) that he did NOT get the nomination that year.

"So....was it cable tv or rock 'n' roll that ended the cold war?" Ask the people of those countries. Do you think they were only moved and inspired by politicians (most of whom they never heard)? That's rather naive.

I love Reagan

"Conservative no longer means anything"I'm sure that's what you want people to believe. But coming from someone who bashes Reagan as you do, it be hard to convince anyone that you know what you're talking about. Reagan basically saved the conservative movement in this country, and that's why many on the left attempt to discredit him. But most know what the truth really is.(whether they accept it or not is another thing) So....was it cable tv or rock 'n' roll that ended the cold war?

Reagan ran in '68 but his heart really wasn't in it. He'd only been Gov of CA for a year at that point. '76 the Republican's made a mistake in nominating Ford, and they knew it. It was destiny for Reagan to win in '80. Yes Carter was obviously very beatable, but what about '84 when Reagan won 49 of 50 states? And a record amount of delegates? Explain that. Ever heard of 'Reagan Democrats'? Most of the Country knew he was the right man at the right time.

Conservative no longer means anything - thanks in large part to Reagan/Bush/Bush.I'm more libertarian - not drinkin' the party kool-aid like you.

Everybody (except you I guess) knows that booming communication technology (satellite, cable, etc.) was indeed having an impact on the Eastern Europe, albeit indirectly in the early stages. Unlike 1968 and 1976, 1980 (vs. Carter) was finally good timing for Reagan. Get perspective - Stalin & Mickey Mouse would have beaten Carter that year! Cut and paste that, dude! |
